Terms of use

Written to be read rather than skipped. Most of what follows matters only if you post something, and the short version of that part is: write the thing you would have wanted to read when you arrived with this fault, and do not use someone else’s words to do it.

Who these terms are between

These terms are an agreement between you and GolfIssues, which operates this site. GolfIssues is published anonymously. That does not change the agreement, and every route for asking about it, enforcing it, or complaining about it runs through the contact form.

Using the site means accepting these terms. If you do not accept them, the remedy is straightforward: do not use it. Reading a fix and running a diagnosis needs no account. Posting needs one, and posting is where most of what follows applies.

What happens to data is a separate document: the privacy policy.

What GolfIssues is, and what it is not

It is a diagnostic tool. You describe a symptom you can observe, answer a short series of questions, and the site selects a pre-written explanation of the most likely cause and how to work on it. How that is produced, and exactly where it stops being reliable, is set out in full on the methodology page.

It is not instruction from a coach who can see you, it is not a substitute for one, and it is not medical advice. Golf is physical. Practising a change carries the ordinary risk that comes with physical activity, and you take that risk yourself. If something hurts, stop, and see someone qualified to look at it.

Nothing here is a promise of results. A diagnosis is a ranked likelihood drawn from a short questionnaire, not a finding of fact about your swing.

Your account

An account is optional, since the whole diagnostic works without one, and it comes with a few obligations.

  • Signing in uses a one-time link sent to your email address. That link is personal to you. Do not forward it or share access to your account.
  • One person, one account. Do not run several to vote more than once, to manufacture agreement, or to get around a moderation decision.
  • Use an email address you control, and do not impersonate anyone: not a real person, not an organisation, not a coach.
  • You are responsible for what happens under your account. If you think someone else is in it, say so through the contact form and it will be cut off.

You can close your account whenever you like by asking through the contact form. GolfIssues can suspend or close an account that breaks these terms. Except in clear-cut cases such as spam, abuse or attacks on the site, you will be told which term was broken and given a chance to answer.

Comments and contributions

Comments exist so that a golfer can add what actually worked, correct something that is wrong, or report that a fix did not help. All three make the next person’s visit better. Most other things make it worse.

Do not post:

  • abuse, harassment, threats, or anything aimed at a person or a group;
  • spam, advertising, affiliate links, link-building, or promotion of a product, coach, or service;
  • another person’s private information, or an image of someone who has not agreed to it;
  • anything you do not have the right to post, including text or images copied from elsewhere;
  • medical advice dressed up as fact, or anything that encourages somebody to play through pain;
  • claims you know to be false, posted to mislead someone about their own fault;
  • anything intended to manipulate votes, ranking, or trending, including asking other people to vote.

Automated access: ordinary crawling by a search engine is welcome. Scraping the site in bulk, flooding it with requests, or using it to assemble a competing dataset is not.

The licence you give us

You keep ownership of everything you post. You are not signing it over.

So that a comment can actually be shown to anyone, you grant GolfIssues a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to store, display, reproduce, and distribute what you post, on this site and in the ordinary course of running it. That includes formatting it, shortening it in a listing, and keeping it visible in a thread that other people have replied to.

The licence lasts as long as the content is published. Delete a comment, or ask for it to be removed, and the licence ends with it, except for copies in backups that expire on their own schedule and anything the law requires be kept.

Nothing beyond that is granted. What you post will not be sold, licensed to a third party, placed in an advertisement, or used to train a machine-learning model.

You confirm that what you post is yours to post and does not infringe anyone’s rights. If a claim is brought against GolfIssues because of something you posted, that is your responsibility.

Moderation and removal

Anything posted here can be edited, hidden, or removed, with or without notice, if it breaks these terms or is simply not useful to the next person who reads it. Votes that appear to have been manipulated can be discounted or reset.

Two things worth stating honestly:

  • Nothing is pre-moderated. Content appears as it is posted and is reviewed afterwards, so at any moment something may be visible that should not be. If you find it, report it through the contact form.
  • Removal is not an accusation. A comment can be taken down for being wrong about the physics, or for pointing someone at a change that would make their strike worse, without anyone thinking you acted in bad faith.

There is no obligation to monitor everything posted, and no obligation to keep anything published.

The site’s own content

The text, the diagrams, the diagnostic tree, and the code behind them belong to GolfIssues.

You are welcome to read it, link to it, print a page for your own use, and quote a short extract with a link back. Please do.

You may not republish substantial parts of it, sell it, present it as your own, or copy it in bulk by automated means, including for the purpose of training a machine-learning system. Every page here is written and checked by hand, which is the entire value of it.

The works this site draws on are cited on the methodology page and belong to their own authors.

Availability, changes, and links out

No uptime is promised. The site may be unavailable, slow, or partly broken at any time, planned or otherwise.

Anything here may change. Pages are corrected when they are found to be wrong, which is the advantage of a site with a stated method rather than an author to defend. Features may be added or withdrawn.

The site links out, mostly to the sources listed on the methodology page. Those sites are not ours, we do not control what they publish, and a link is not an endorsement.

No warranties

The site is provided as it is and as it is available, with no warranty of any kind, express or implied. To the fullest extent the law allows, that includes any implied warranty of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, or non-infringement.

In plain terms: nobody is promising that a diagnosis is correct, that a fix will work for you, that the site will be up, or that it is free of errors. The methodology page states exactly where the method stops being reliable, and that statement is part of the honest answer to this question rather than a disclaimer bolted onto it.

Limits on liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, GolfIssues is not liable for:

  • indirect, incidental, consequential, or special loss of any kind;
  • loss of data, loss of profit, loss of opportunity, or wasted expenditure;
  • anything arising from acting on a diagnosis, a fix, a drill, or a comment written by another user;
  • any injury, or the worsening of an existing injury, arising from practising a change described here, because golf is physical and you are the only person who can judge what your body will take;
  • anything another user posts.

Where liability cannot be excluded, it is limited to the amount you have paid to use the site, which is nothing.

Some places do not allow some of these exclusions. Where that is the case the exclusion does not apply to you, and nothing here is intended to limit liability that the law does not permit to be limited.

Changes to these terms

These terms can change. The date at the top of this page is the date they last changed. If a change is material, meaning something that alters what you may post, the licence you grant, or how an account can be closed, it will be described here rather than folded in quietly.

Continuing to use the site after a change means accepting the new version. If you do not accept it, close your account and stop using the site.

If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
